Post-Surgery Rehabilitation: What's the Timeline?

If you've recently had surgery — or are planning to — understanding the rehabilitation timeline can help you set realistic expectations and stay motivated throughout your recovery.

At Reading Wellness Clinic, we provide structured post-operative rehabilitation for a range of procedures. Here's a general guide to what you can expect.

Knee Replacement

  • Weeks 1–6: Regain range of motion, reduce swelling, walking independently
  • Weeks 6–12: Strengthen quadriceps and hamstrings, improve balance
  • 3–6 months: Return to most daily activities, low-impact exercise
  • 6–12 months: Full recovery, return to sport (if applicable)

  • ACL Reconstruction

  • Weeks 1–6: Regain full extension, reduce swelling, progress weight-bearing
  • Weeks 6–12: Strengthen quadriceps, begin single-leg exercises
  • 3–6 months: Running progression, agility drills
  • 9–12 months: Return to sport with confidence

  • Shoulder Surgery (Rotator Cuff Repair)

  • Weeks 1–6: Protect the repair, gentle passive movements
  • Weeks 6–12: Begin active movement, light strengthening
  • 3–6 months: Progressive strengthening and functional exercises
  • 6–9 months: Return to full function

  • Hip Replacement

  • Weeks 1–6: Walking independently, basic exercises
  • Weeks 6–12: Strengthening, balance work
  • 3–6 months: Return to most activities
  • 6–12 months: Full recovery

  • Why Rehabilitation Matters

Surgery is only part of the solution — rehabilitation is where the real recovery happens. A structured, progressive rehab programme can significantly improve outcomes, reduce complications, and get you back to the things you love faster.

Please note: these are general timelines. Your specific recovery will depend on the procedure, your overall health, and your engagement with the rehabilitation process. Your physiotherapist will tailor the programme to you.
